Broken internal link

An internal link is one page on your own site linking to another page on your own site. When the target returns an error or no response, that's a broken internal link — and unlike an external broken link, it's entirely within your control to fix.

Why it matters

Broken internal links waste the crawl budget search engines spend following your own site's link structure, and they're a direct, frustrating dead end for real visitors.

How to fix it

Update or remove the link to point at a live, correct URL.
Run a periodic internal link audit rather than waiting to discover breakage by accident.
Check whether the broken link is templated (e.g. in a nav or footer) — one template fix can resolve it site-wide.
