Duplicate content across pages
When two or more URLs serve byte-identical (or near-identical) content, search engines have to pick one to rank and often split ranking signals — links, authority, relevance — across the duplicates instead of concentrating them on a single page.
Why it matters
Duplicate content dilutes your ranking potential for the query these pages would otherwise compete for together, and wastes crawl budget on pages search engines have to de-duplicate themselves.
How to fix it
- Pick one canonical version of the content and 301-redirect or canonicalize the rest to it.
- If duplicates are legitimate (e.g. print-friendly or filtered views), use rel=canonical rather than letting both compete.
- Check for accidental duplication first — staging URLs, trailing-slash variants, or http/https both being crawlable.
