Redirect chain
A redirect chain is a URL that redirects to another URL that redirects again (sometimes several times) before reaching the final page. Each extra hop is unnecessary latency for users and extra work for crawlers.
Why it matters
Each hop in a chain slightly erodes link equity passed through the redirect, slows page load for anyone following the original link, and burns crawl budget that could go toward new content.
How to fix it
- Update every redirect in the chain to point directly at the final destination — one hop, not several.
- Audit your redirect rules periodically; chains often form gradually as pages get moved more than once over time.
- Update internal links to point straight at the final URL instead of relying on a redirect at all.
